Sierra Leone could hardly wait for Super Bowl XLV to kick off before hitting world fame once again. Before one of the World’s biggest sporting showpieces —The Super Bowl ( Grand Final of the American National Football League ) started this evening with millions of television viewers all over the world watching , the victor of the Walter Payton NFL Man of The Year Award was announced , and the winner was….SIERRA LEONE ! ! ! ! The award, which dates back to 1970, recognizes a player’s commitment to community service and his performance on the field.
Madieu Williams, a Sierra Leonean -born American football star clinched the award , beating the two other finalists, Israel Idonije and Nnandi Asomugha ( Both of them Nigerians ) . To the tearful pride of thousands of Sierra Leoneans watching the starting ceremonies of the Super Bowl, Madieu Williams was then shown in a video standing proudly in the midst of U.S. soldiers in Iraq where he will watch the sporting spectacular with the servicemen.
Williams , who was wearing a jersey of the 4th Infantry Division as he stood with the troops during the video, excitedly but graciously acknowledged the result : “It is a tremendous honor to win this award named after Walter Payton, one of the greatest men to ever play in the National Football League. I’m sorry I couldn’t be there to accept the award, but it’s an even greater honor to be here in Iraq with Task Force Iron Horse on a goodwill tour watching the Super Bowl with our troops.”
According to Profootballweekly, ”Williams has started 38 of the 39 games in which he has played since signing with the Vikings before the 2008 season. He made a $2 million donation to create a Center for Global Health at the University of Maryland, where he attended college, and he works with several charities in Minnesota to help children in need.” Madieu plays for the Minnesota Vikings.
Our telephones immediately started ringing as jubilant Sierra Leoneans from across the Continental USA started calling COCORIOKO for the paper to flash the news around the world. One of the callers was crying with joy.
COCORIOKO congratulates Mr. Madieu Williams and Sierra Leone. Yes, we can ! ! ! !
